Our CRC enters its third Funding Period!

On Thursday, November 20, we received the long-awaited decision from the DFG following the review on September 10 and 11, with excellent news: our Collaborative Research Centre will officially enter its third funding period on January 1, 2026.

You can find the Press Release Statement of the DFG here (released on 21.11.2026 in German) :

As we move into the new phase, we bid a grateful farewell to the WIAS as a partner institution and thank them for their successful and trusted collaboration over the past years. At the same time, we are delighted to welcome two new partners to our consortium, HMU Potsdam and the University of Rostock.

We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the PIs who will not continue with us in the next phase, Han Cheng Lie, Milena Rabovsky and Vladimir Spokoiny, and express our appreciation for their dedicated contributions to the CRC.

We warmly welcome our new PIs: Sebastian Hainzl (GFZ UP), Martin Redmann (University of Rostock), Daniel Schad (HMU Potsdam), Bernhard Stankewitz (UP), and Thorsten Wagener (UP). We look forward to the collaboration and the new perspectives they will bring to the CRC.

The upcoming funding period introduces two exciting new projects in our Algorithms and Application research area:

  • B10: Bayesian deep learning to study non Gaussianity, correlations, and change points in cell driven transport
Principal investigators: Carsten Beta and Robert Großmann

  • B11: Understanding time varying Earth System properties using data assimilation
Principal investigators: Thorsten Wagener and Sebastian Reich

We are excited about the many joint events ahead, the inspiring guests we will welcome, and the productive collaborative research that awaits us.

Here we go!
